Todd Named Interim Head Of Anesthesia
Michael Todd, M.D. (left), professor of anesthesia in the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, has been named interim head of the UI Department of Anesthesia. The appointment will be effective July 1.
Todd will serve as interim department head while a nationwide search is conducted to fill the position vacated by David Brown, M.D., who is leaving the UI to become chair of anesthesia and medical director of the operating suite, University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. Brown has served as UI department head since 1997.
"We are extremely fortunate to have someone of Dr. Todd's caliber to take up the reins as interim head of anesthesia, and I am very grateful that Dr. Todd has agreed to step into this role," said Jean Robillard, M.D., dean of the UI Carver College of Medicine. "He is nationally recognized as an outstanding physician and he has been instrumental in developing the department's reputation for clinical and research excellence."
Donna Katen-Bahensky, director and CEO of UI Hospitals and Clinics, echoed Dean Robillard's sentiments.
"Dr. Todd is an excellent choice to take on the role of interim head," Katen-Bahensky said. "He brings enormous energy and depth of expertise to all three missions of the department as well as a proven dedication to his patients, students and colleagues.
"We are also deeply appreciative of Dr. Brown's leadership over the past seven years," Katen-Bahensky added. "He has built one of the best anesthesia departments in the country."
Todd's clinical and research interests include anesthesia for neurosurgical patients, the effects of anesthetics on normal and injured brains and the use of mild hypothermia (cooling) as a neuroprotective treatment. Todd is principal investigator of the IHAST2 (Intraoperative Hypothermia for Aneurysm Surgery Trial, Part 2), which is a large, multi-center stage III clinical trial investigating whether mild cooling of the brain can improve the neurological outcome for patients being treated for a brain hemorrhage. The study is the largest of its kind and is funded by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.
Todd also is a co-director of the UI Graduate Program in Translational Biomedicine and has a long-standing involvement in education and training of medical students and early-career physicians.
Todd earned his medical degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine in 1975 and completed a residency in anesthesia at Massachusetts General Hospital where he was chief resident in anesthesia from 1978 to 1979. He joined the UI Department of Anesthesia in 1986 and was promoted to full professor in 1990. In addition to authoring over 130 scientific articles, Todd also is editor in chief of the journal Anesthesiology, the world's most widely published journal in anesthesiology.
