Cedar Rapids McKinley Middle School Students Visit UI Campus
The University of Iowa's Opportunity at Iowa program hosted a group of 22 middle school students from McKinley Middle School in Cedar Rapids on Tuesday, June 29. McKinley Associate Principal Jane Lonegreen-Highley coordinated the visit with Nancy J. Humbles, multicultural affairs coordinator with the UI Opportunity at Iowa program.
The students attended presentations by the UI Offices of Admissions, Financial Aid, Special Support Services and the College of Engineering.
By hosting such visits, the UI encourages middle-school children to begin thinking about the advantages a college education would provide them and opportunities it would open up to them. Presentations provide critical information about classes that are necessary to prepare for college and stress the importance of strong academic performance. For the student who believes he or she cannot go to college because of the expense, the financial aid information opens up new possibilities. In addition to the presentations, students toured the campus and had a chance to interact with UI students during a panel session.
Part of the Office of the Provost, Opportunity at Iowa is a coordinated university-wide effort to create and maintain campus diversity and to provide opportunities for all university students interested in other cultures. Working collaboratively with such offices as Admissions, Orientation, Equal Opportunity and Diversity, Student Financial Aid, the Graduate College and Support Service Programs, Opportunity at Iowa provides information about various academic resources available to enhance a student's collegiate experience while attending the UI.
Opportunity at Iowa is located at 224 Jessup Hall at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa. For more information, call 319-335-3555 or 1-800-553-IOWA (4692), or email email@example.com.
