UI Engineering Professor Awarded British Honor
Kwan Rim, professor emeritus and founder of the Department of Biomedical Engineering in the University of Iowa College of Engineering, has been named an honorary Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE). The award, as approved by Her Majesty The Queen, was announced May 26 by the British Ambassador to Korea for major contributions toward developing the relationship between the United Kingdom and Korea.
Rim took an extended leave of absence from the UI to return to Korea in 1995 to work in business and industry. He is the chairman and former president and CEO of the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT), the central research laboratory of the Samsung Group.
After earning his doctorate in theoretical and applied mechanics from Northwestern University in 1960, Rim joined the UI Department of Mechanics and Hydraulics that same year. He served as chairman of the Department of Mechanics and Hydraulics (1971-74), associate dean of engineering (1974-79), chairman of the Division of Materials Engineering (1978-84), and chairman of the Department of Biomedical Engineering (1984-90).
Rim held a National Science Foundation SEED (Scientists and Engineers for Economic Development) Professorship (1976-77), served as president of the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) (1982-84) and as a 1992 visiting professor in Japan. He has also served on the boards of directors of numerous educational and research institutes. He was the 1992 recipient of the Outstanding Biomedical Engineering Educator Award from the American Society for Engineering Education. He also served on the President's Council on Science and Technology of the Republic of Korea.
In support of UK-Korea high technology business links, Rim has helped ensure the success of the annual UK-Korea High Tech Forum, which brings together senior figures from both countries and formulates policy recommendations.
