Tamango's Urban Tap Goes 'Full Cycle' In Hancher

The spring semester at the University of Iowa Hancher Auditorium will open with the multimedia spectacle of "Full Cycle" by Tamango's Urban Tap at 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24.

Tamango's visit to the UI will begin with a free Welcome Party/Jam at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, in Old Brick.

A Los Angeles Times review suggested that Tamango's "Full Cycle" is what you might get "if Cirque du Soleil, voodoo rituals and a refined hip-hop sensibility merged."

Herbin "Tamango" Van Cayseele is a tap-dancing prodigy who came to New York from French Guiana via Paris. A New York Times review of the sold-out "Full Cycle" premiere observed, "Like all great dancers, Tamango has a signature style but never ceases to surprise. . . The spirit that inhabits his dancing changes a real body into unimagined and elegant shapes. Tamango is an astonishingly fluid performer, always loose with swiveling hips, rubbery legs and a mobile torso but still brilliantly sharp in the crystal clear virtuosity of his complex tapping."

He has gathered an international ensemble of dancers and musicians whose performances combine tap traditions from around the globe, propelled by red-hot rhythmic riffs, with poetry and massive multi-layered video projections, both live and pre-recorded.

Tamango's tap dancing is the heart of Urban Tap, but "Full Cycle" also features Brazilian martial art, an Italian trumpeter, an American break-dancer, a Haitian percussionist and other musicians from India, Peru and Canada.

Dance Insider called the result "a whirlwind of percussionist performers brought together and led by the young gifted visionary Tamango. Urban Tap is original and uncategorizable. . . it is a moment to be indelibly remembered."
