High School Journalists Win Awards Covering IHSPA Conferences

Winners of three On-the-Spot Contests were selected and recognized recently at the Iowa High School Press Association's Fall State and Regional conferences, held respectively at the University of Iowa, Oct. 6, and Drake University, Des Moines, Oct. 18.

In the On-the-Spot Writing Contests, students covered news and sports events during sessions at the conferences, then immediately afterwards wrote stories about them.

Students visually covered the first two hours of the conference in the On-the-Spot Photography Contest. Each student contestant entered 24 color photos in the contest.

Winners of the contests at each respective conference were recognized and presented with awards during the Awards Ceremony at the end of the day.

Listed below are contest results from the IHSPA Fall State Conference at the UI Oct. 6:

On-the-Spot News Writing Contest:

1st Place - Frances Vernon, Washington High School, Cedar Rapids

2nd Place - Josh Hillman, Kennedy High School, Cedar Rapids

3rd Place - Danielle Faille, Kennedy High School, Cedar Rapids

4th Place - Liz Fisher, Vinton-Shellsburg High School

Honorable Mention - Jennifer French, Prairie High School, Cedar Rapids

Honorable Mention - Kim Hanneman - Vinton Shellsburg High School

Honorable Mention - Allison Mollman, Prairie High School, Cedar Rapids

Honorable Mention - Renagh O'Leary - Davenport Central High School

Students covered a session by Davenport Central High School student Hallie Kilmer who is organizing a state effort in the national student-run, non-partisan, voter turnout campaign, Freedom's Answer.

On-the-Spot Sports Writing Contest:

1st Place - Justin De Graff, PCM High School

2nd Place - Ben Abzug, Kennedy High School, Cedar Rapids

3rd Place - Noelle Plueger, North Cedar High School, Stanwood

Honorable Mention - Adrienne Gathman, PCM High School

Sports writing contestants covered a session by Jason Brummond, sports writer with the Daily Iowan, the UI student newspaper, on his experiences covering college sports.

On-the-Spot Photography Contest:

1st Place - Katy Gordish, Hudson High School

2nd Place - Alyssa Horman, North Cedar High School, Stanwood

3rd Place - Emily Lemburg, Davenport Central High School

Honorable Mention - Danny Nordstrom, Kennedy High School, Cedar Rapids

3rd Place - Sara Stewart, SE Polk High School, Runnells

Honorable Mention - Kyra Vander Weerdt, Lynnville-Sully High School

Students covered a session by Brad Clark, project coordinator for the GLBT Youth in Iowa Schools organization, on the everyday lives of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students and how journalists can accurately reflect that in coverage.

On-the-Spot Sports Writing Contest:

1st Place - Andrew Steckel, Davenport Central High School

2nd Place - Mike Slusark, Johnston High School

3rd Place - Stacie Benditen, Johnston High School

Contestants covered a presentation by Iowa State University Assistant Professor David Bulla on sports coverage in high school media

On-the-Spot Photography Contest:

1st Place - Alicia Corron, Johnston High School

2nd Place - Josh Wilhite, SE Polk High School, Runnells

3rd Place - Afton Simpson, Johnston High School

Honorable Mention - James Ferguson, Lynnville-Sully High School
