UI Alumni Band Seeks Members For Oct. 1-2 Homecoming Festivities

The University of Iowa Alumni Association wants former members of the Hawkeye Marching Band to participate in the UI Alumni Band at the 2004 Homecoming festivities Oct. 1 and 2 in Iowa City.

Now in its 31st year, the Alumni Band has become a popular feature of recent UI Homecoming celebrations. It will once again participate in the annual Homecoming Parade on Friday evening, Oct. 1, and perform for the pre-game show before the 2 p.m. kickoff of the UI-Michigan State football game Saturday, Oct. 2.

Interested UI band alumni can register for the Alumni Band on the web at http://www.iowalum.com/band/index.html. The related web site will also include music available for band members to download before arriving in Iowa City. The band will have a one-hour pre-game practice on Saturday morning before the Homecoming football game.

"We are but a short time away from the UI Homecoming 2004, of which the highlight will be the now world-famous Iowa Alumni Band," commented Johnny Gilbert, director of the Alumni Band. "This year will be no different than the past three: Once again the Alumni Band will 'Take Back the Field' by performing solo at the pre-game show of the Iowa vs. Michigan State' game on Oct. 2!"

Gilbert, who is directing the Alumni Band for the first year, succeeds Tom Davis, who led the group for its first 30 years. Davis taught percussion at the UI School of Music and served several years as director of the Hawkeye Marching Band.

There are no limits on the number of players for the parade on Friday evening. However, because of seating restrictions at the game, registration for the football game Saturday is limited to 200. Reservations and confirmations will be handled on a first come-first served basis. For many years the band has been at full capacity on Saturday, with many more than 200 participating in the parade, so early registration is recommended.

Gilbert stressed that the band is "always in search of more percussionists. We can't have too many of those, and we've got plenty of drums for them to use."

Registered members of the Alumni Band will be seated for the game with the Hawkeye Marching Band in the band section. Family members and guests of Alumni Band members will need to purchase a game ticket from the Athletic Ticket Office, 319-335-9327.

To assure a place in the festivities, potential band members are urged to submit their registration form as soon as possible, but no later than Monday, September 20, 2004.

Information on the UI Alumni Band is available on the internet at https://www.iowalum.com/band.
