Nursing Dean Elected To Beverly Enterprises Board of Directors

Beverly Enterprises, Inc. last week announced that Melanie C. Dreher, Ph.D., the Kelting Dean and Professor of the University of Iowa College of Nursing, has been elected to the company's board of directors.

Beverly Enterprises, Inc. (www.beverlycares.com) and its operating subsidiaries are leading providers of health care services to the elderly in the United States, with total employment of more than 35,000 and annual revenues of nearly $2 billion. Headquartered in Fort Smith, Ark., Beverly is a public company traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol "BEV." Beverly has three primary business units: Beverly Healthcare, Aegis Therapies and AseraCare Hospice.

Beverly Healthcare operates 356 skilled nursing facilities and 18 assisted living centers in 25 states and the District of Columbia. Beverly Healthcare is recognized as the national leader in developing innovative care approaches that significantly improve the quality of life for Alzheimer's patients. Beverly has specialized Alzheimer's care units at nearly 100 of its facilities.

Through Aegis Therapies, Beverly provides physical, occupational and speech therapy services on a contract basis to facilities operated by other care providers. Aegis is the largest contract rehabilitation company in the country, serving 575 outside customers as well as all of Beverly's nursing homes. Through its "Freedom Through Functionality" program, Aegis offers strength-training exercises to nursing home residents at selected locations using specially modified Nautilus equipment.

Beverly's AseraCare subsidiary is the fastest-growing hospice company in the United States, serving more than 2,000 patients daily through 43 locations in 14 states.

"I'm honored to have been invited to serve on a corporate leadership team that is committed to quality in long-term care and is consistent with the goals and values of the College of Nursing regarding the care of elders," Dreher said.

The UI College of Nursing is nationally ranked number two by U.S. News and World Report for its geriatric nurse practitioner program. The college invests significant resources in research to improve the care of elders including two research centers, the Geriatric Nursing Interventions Research Center, and the John A. Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence. In addition, the College has an Adult and Gerontological Nursing area of study.

Dreher has been dean of the UI College of Nursing since 1997. Among other leadership activities, Dreher was president of Sigma Theta Tau International, the international nursing honor society, and president of the Council on Nursing and Anthropology.

In addition to Beverly Enterprises, Dreher currently serves on the board of directors of Wellmark Health Plan of Iowa and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Board of Directors.
