International Educational Organization Recognizes UI Alumni Association

On three separate occasions this past year, the University of Iowa Alumni Association (UIAA) has received special recognition from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).

CASE, an international organization for alumni relations, communications and development professionals, selected a UIAA event honoring the work of UI faculty, the association's website, and an electronic newsletter for students as among the best such programs and communications in the United States.

CASE most recently honored the UIAA for an event in California. Co-sponsored by the UI Department of Physics and Astronomy, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the Philharmonic Society of Orange County, "Space Odyssey" received a silver Circle of Excellence Award in CASE's Alumni Relations Collaborative category.

Described by judges as a model for other institutions, "Space Odyssey" featured a presentation by UI physics professor Don Gurnett on his involvement with Sun Rings -- a unique multimedia event based on his 40-year collection of space plasma soundwaves. The program, which drew a crowd of some 200 people, also included an interactive presentation called "Exploring Space" for kids by UI physics and astronomy faculty and a reception where attendees could meet the faculty members.

"The award is great for the entire university, and I appreciate the UI Alumni Association's efforts in organizing the 'Space Odyssey' program," Gurnett said.

Also this spring, the online component of Iowa Alumni Magazine collected a bronze award at the CASE Circle of Excellence Awards. Judges selected www.iowalum.com/magazine from 31 other entries in the category of online publications submitted by higher education institutions around the country.

Calling it "an appealing and well-designed site," members of the judging committee praised the online version of Iowa Alumni Magazine for its extensive content, including the web exclusives and multimedia presentations that supplement articles carried over from the print publication.

Monthly Mayhem, an electronic newsletter published by the UI Alumni Association for 3,000 members of its student group, S.T.A.T. (Students Today, Alumni Tomorrow), also received special recognition from CASE. The organization's Association of Student Advancement Programs awarded Monthly Mayhem an Outstanding Newsletter Certificate.

This year's CASE awards mark the sixth year in a row that the UI Alumni Association has received special national recognition.
