UI Program To Focus On Diversity In Media, Academia April 27
Journalism students in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences will host a program, "Diversity in the Media and Academia," at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 27, in Room 101, Biology Building East.
Ernest Sotomayor, the president of UNITY: Journalists of Color and the Long Island editor at Newsday.com, will deliver a 30-minute keynote speech followed by a panel discussion and open dialogue. Panelists representing the media and academia will share their insights about what's working and not working regarding diversity in the media and in the classroom.
The panelists are Pam Creedon, director of the UI School of Journalism and Mass Communication; Renee Chou, KCRG-TV 9 anchor/reporter; Randy Essex, assistant managing editor, Des Moines Register; Leo Eko, UI assistant professor of journalism; and David Stoeffler, vice president of news at Lee Enterprises in Davenport.
The diversity program is sponsored by the UI chapters of the Society of Professional Journalists, the National Association of Black Journalists and the Public Relations Student Society of America.
