More than 300 elementary school students will experience "A Global Family Under One Roof" during The University of Iowa International Programs' Annual Open House Friday, April 23.
The event, which will be held in the International Center Lounge on the UI campus, will be held in two shifts, with approximately half the students visiting from 9 to 11 a.m. and the other half from noon to 2 p.m. The students are second- through sixth-graders from eight schools in Iowa City, Cedar Rapids, Amana, West Branch, Lone Tree and Muscatine.
Children will be able to tour a Japanese bedroom featuring a Japanese story, a Turkish living room featuring Turkish decorations, an Indian kitchen featuring Indian food, an African wardrobe where students can try on clothes from Africa, a multinational garage featuring transportation from around the world, and a multinational backyard where students will play mini-golf and learn about cultural landmarks from around the world.
"The theme was chosen to expose young students to the differences among cultures, yet at the same time highlight the similarities we share as part of the global family," said Buffy Quintero, International Programs' outreach coordinator. "The students will interact with our volunteers and learn that, although the rooms may be different, the families in our international house are peacefully coexisting as a global family under one roof."
Many of the UI's international and study abroad students will assist with the activities. This program is supported by a U.S. Department of Education National Resource Center grant for international studies and UI International Programs. For more information regarding the open house or special accommodations to participate in this event, contact Buffy Quintero at 319-335-0345 or email@example.com.
The UI International Center is located at the end of Ferson Avenue in Iowa City, off of Park Road or by foot up the stairway from Riverside Drive.
International Programs consists of a number of offices, centers, academic programs, research projects and services. Organized under the associate provost for academic programs and dean of International Programs, these units serve to further internationalize the campus and community and to promote global scholarship, research, and training.
