UI Hosts June 11 Conference On Diabetes And Obesity
Obesity, which has reached epidemic proportions in the United States, will be the focus of the Joseph D. Brown Annual Diabetes Conference at the University of Iowa. The all-day event will be Friday, June 11 in Room 2117 of the Medical Education and Biomedical Research Facility (MERF), located on Newton Road on the University of Iowa health sciences campus.
The program is intended for physicians, nurses and other health professionals who want to know more about the epidemiology of obesity, associated risks and proper management for patients. The conference is sponsored by the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine and the UI Department of Internal Medicine.
Registration fees are $150 for physicians; $75 for nurses and allied health care professionals; and $40 for retired physicians. All fees include registration, syllabus materials, continuing education credit and breakfast, refreshments and lunch. Parking is available for a $12 all-day fee in the Newton Road Parking Ramp, located directly across from MERF.

Joseph D. Brown, M.D., was a UI associate professor in internal medicine who joined the faculty in 1962 and treated many patients with diabetes. His research focused on managing diabetes, and he organized annual continuing medical education conferences to educate heath care professionals about the disease. Brown died in 1995.
