The University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine has named Patrick Thompson associate dean for finance and administration, effective May 4. In this position, Thompson will serve as the chief administrative officer for the college and principal business officer for the faculty practice plan.
Thompson comes to the UI from the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine, where he serves as executive director of the school's faculty practice plan. Prior to that position, Thompson was director of strategic business development with the University of Utah Health System and executive director of the University of Utah faculty practice plan.
Thompson has more than 20 years of senior level experience in health care management and leadership. He has held top management positions in both for-profit and not-for-profit environments with hands-on responsibility and accountability for capital development, budget formulation, compliance, financial systems development, contracting and cash flow management.
His professional affiliations include the Association of American Medical Colleges, the Healthcare Financial Management Association, the University Health System Consortium and the Medical Group Management Association.
"I am pleased to announce the appointment of Patrick Thompson to this key administrative position in the Carver College of Medicine," said Jean Robillard, M.D., dean of the college. "He brings to this position a tremendous level of experience in financial management, as well as a solid understanding of academic health systems. I look forward to working with him."
A Davenport native, Thompson earned his bachelor's degree in political science from St. Ambrose University in Davenport in 1969.
He replaces Dennis Domsic, who has joined the UI Office of the Vice President for Finance and Operations. Domsic has served the college on a transitional basis for the past several months.
