UI Graduate Student To Discuss Health, Research In Russia April 19

Meredith Good, a University of Iowa graduate student in international studies, will speak about her experiences as a research intern with the MiraMed Institute and Angel Coalition in Moscow, Russia, at the next International Mondays lecture, April 19. The lecture, entitled, "Internal Wounds: External (Band) Aids," will take place in the International Center Lounge from noon to 1 p.m. The lecture is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

The MiraMed Institute and Angel Coalition are social organizations that work with marginalized populations. Good will discuss how these populations, due to their status within Russian society, bear the blame for many current social problems, such as the rampant spread of HIV infections.

"However, these populations are in fact, victims of the structures that have shaped their existence," Good said.

Good received her bachelor's degree in anthropology and Russian in 1999 from Grinnell College. Her research interests include current health care reforms in Russia, with a research emphasis on HIV/AIDS.

For more information on this lecture or International Mondays, contact Buffy Quintero, International Programs outreach coordinator, at 319-335-0345.

The International Mondays series is sponsored by UI International Programs and the Stanley-UI Foundation Support Organization and presents discussions with individuals who have had international experiences. The lectures are usually from noon to 1 p.m. every Monday in the International Center Lounge or other locations on campus throughout the academic year with the exception of holidays and breaks.

UI International Programs consists of a number of offices, centers, degree programs, academic programs, research projects and services. Organized under the associate provost for academic programs and dean of international programs, these units serve to further internationalize the campus and the community and promote global scholarship, research and teaching.
