UI Students Participating In International Week Of Music In Germany

Four students from the University of Iowa School of Music have traveled to Germany to participate in "Campus Cantat '04," part of the International Week of Music at the University of Dortmund.

The four students -- undergraduate Rebekah Trotter from Ainsworth; and graduate students Margaret Clair from Fairfield, Marc Falk from Iowa City and Michael Porter from St. Charles, Mo. -- left on Wednesday, April 7, for the festival, which continues through Friday, April 16.

The four singers will be part of an international choir of about 120 singers, who will rehearse choral works by five composers and perform them in three public concerts. In keeping with this year's theme, "Goethe, Voices, Elements," all five works are settings of text by the German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe on the themes "water," "air," "fire" and "earth."

The works to be performed during the festival concerts are "Meerestille and Glueckliche Fahrt" (Calm sea and prosperous voyage) by Beethoven; "Gesang der Geister ueber den Wassern" (Song of the spirit over the waters) by Franz Schubert; the first performance of a new version of a scene from Goethe's "Faust," composed by Fanny Hensel and arranged by Reinhard Fehling, who is artistic director of the festival; "Die erste Walpurgisnacht" (The first Walpurgis Night) by Felix Mandelssohn; and "Scenes from Goethe's 'Faust'" by Robert Schumann.

Singers attending "Campus Cantat '04" were selected by the participating institutions.

The School of Music is part of the Division of Performing Arts in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
