Writers' Workshop Graduate Celebrates New Magazine With Reading
Recent University of Iowa Writers' Workshop graduate Sandra Miller will celebrate the publication of her new literary magazine, 1913: A Journal of Forms, with a free reading at 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 13 in the Prairie Lights book store at 15 S. Dubuque St. in downtown Iowa City.
Among the contributors who will participate are Writers' Workshop faculty member Cole Swensen and Louis Georges Schwarz, a faculty member in cinema and comparative literature. Also reading will be Sandy Brown, Chris Chen, Biswamit Dwibedy, Scott Inguito and Susan Maxwell, most of whom are current or former workshop students.
The magazine, launched with financial support from the Iowa Arts Council, takes inspiration from "the protean and collaborative spirit of early 20th century Modernism . . . publishing formally innovative works of verbal art in an attempt to deterritorialize established and emerging artists, from Iowa and beyond, exploding the concept of the literary journal."
The Writers' Workshop and the cinema and comparative literature department are academic units of the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
