Iowa's Center for Agricultural Safety and Health (I-CASH) and the Iowa Rural Health Association (IRHA) will co-host the Midwest Agricultural Safety and Health Forum Nov. 5-6 at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. The early-registration deadline for the meeting is Oct. 15 and continuing education credits are available.

The forum will feature keynote lectures from two nationally renowned experts in the field of rural health and safety. On Wednesday, Nov. 5, Cornelia Butler Flora, Ph.D., the Charles F. Curtis Distinguished Professor of Agriculture and Sociology, and director of the North Central Regional Center for Rural Development at Iowa State University, will present "Comparison of Industrial and Sustainable Agriculture." On Thursday, Nov. 6, Frederick Kirschenmann, Ph.D., director of the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture at Iowa State University, will discuss "Ecological Health: Maintaining the Capacity for Renewal."

This meeting is for farm safety and environmental health experts, health care professionals, researchers, educators, policy makers, farmers and members of the public who are interested in improving the safety and health of rural citizens.

"The partnering of IRHA and I-CASH made it possible to organize this premiere agricultural safety and health conference," said Kelley Donham, D.V.M., director of I-CASH and professor of occupational and environmental health in the University of Iowa College of Public Health. "This is an excellent opportunity for rural health care providers, and safety and health professionals to hear cutting edge presentations that will focus on strategies to aid development of a healthy, sustainable, rural Iowa."

Forum participants will discuss issues concerning agricultural and rural safety and health and will hear presentations on related outreach, education programs and research.

Specific topics will include: socio-economics and rural health; rural health care services; community, social and mental health; healthy food and sustainable agriculture; and rural and environmental health.

Partial funding for the Midwest Agricultural Safety and Health Forum is provided by I-CASH and the IRHA. Co-sponsors for the meeting are the Environmental Health Sciences Research Center, the Great Plains Center for Agricultural Health, the Heartland Center for Occupational Health and Safety, and the Iowa Injury Prevention Research Center all at the UI College of Public Health; the UI Roy J. and Lucille A Carver College of Medicine; the Iowa Medical Society; the National Catholic Rural Life Conference and the Wellmark Foundation.
