SPJ Names UI's Johns Outstanding Campus Adviser
Richard Johns of the University of Iowa School of Journalism and Mass Communication has received the David L. Eshelman Outstanding Campus Adviser Award for 2002-2003 from the Society of Professional Journalists.
The award was presented at the Mark of Excellence Awards luncheon in Tampa, Fla., on Saturday, Sept. 13. Each year the society honors one of the faculty advisers for the student chapters throughout the country. Members of the society are invited to submit nominations for individuals to be considered for this award.
This is the second time that Johns has been the recipient of the Outstanding Campus Adviser Award. He received the award in 1985 and is the only campus adviser to receive the award twice.
Johns has been the UI SPJ faculty adviser since 1972. During his tenure the chapter has received recognition as the outstanding campus chapter in Region 7 (which consists of the states of Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska) as well as the Outstanding Campus National Chapter Award in 2000 and 2001.
Johns is currently an adjunct instructor in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication and the executive director of Quill and Scroll Society. In 2002, the Scholastic Division of the Association of Education in Journalism and Mass Communication named him Journalism Educator of the Year.
