UI Mobile Clinic Will Hold Fundraising Event Sept. 27
The University of Iowa Mobile Clinic will host a softball fundraiser beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at the UI Softball Complex at the intersection of Highway 6 and Mormon Trek Road. The event, which is scheduled to feature 16 co-ed teams, will raise funds to refurbish the clinic's bus and enhance their mobility. The last game is expected to begin around 8 p.m.
Spectators will be asked to make donations for admission, and some spectators will receive gift coupons from Old Chicago. The restaurant, as well as local eateries the Vine and the Wig & Pen, are helping sponsor the event. In addition, the mobile clinic will run a concession stand.
Launched in September 2002, the clinic is a student-run, community-centered health care treatment and education project. The mission of the clinic is to serve underserved populations in Johnson County and the surrounding area, utilize interdisciplinary potential at the UI, raise awareness of existing health resources in the area and connect people in communities served by these resources.
The clinic involves the time and knowledge of more than 200 UI student volunteers from programs in medicine, pharmacy, nursing, social work, dentistry and public health. The clinic regularly visits the Shelter House, Pheasant Ridge Neighborhood Center and Broadway Neighborhood Center -- all in Iowa City -- and the Columbus Junction Community Schools.
The clinic's services include hypertension (high blood pressure) and diabetes screenings, risk assessment counseling, reproductive health services, educational materials and well-child and well-adult physicals.
The clinic is funded in part by a grant from the Association of American Medical Colleges, Pfizer Humanities Initiative's Caring for Community program and individual fundraising efforts.
