Jogerst To Serve As Interim Head Of UI Family Medicine
Gerald J. Jogerst, M.D., University of Iowa associate professor of family medicine, will serve as interim head of the UI Department of Family Medicine and interim head of the UI Family Care Center, effective Oct. 1.
Jogerst will serve in the positions while a nationwide search is conducted to fill the spots vacated by Cynda Johnson, M.D., who leaves the UI Sept. 26 to take a position as dean of the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C. During Johnson's UI tenure, Jogerst held the position of associate head of family medicine.
Jogerst has twice previously served as interim head of the department, from 1994 to 1995 and from 1998 to 1999. Jogerst will retain his position as director of the geriatrics fellowship program.
His areas of expertise include elder abuse, international family medicine training and methods of teaching geriatric medicine. Last year, Jogerst received the "2002 Medical Educator of the Year" award from the Iowa Academy of Family Physicians.
"Dr. Jogerst has generously stepped in to lead the Department of Family Medicine on previous occasions. We are confident that he will more than ably guide the department during this transition," said Jean Robillard, M.D., dean of the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine.
Donna Katen-Bahensky, CEO and director of UI Hospitals and Clinics, said that Jogerst's interim appointment will continue the excellence of the UI Family Care Center, which was established in July 1998.
"Dr. Jogerst's leadership will ensure that our patients at the UI Family
Care Center receive the high standard of care for which our primary care
physicians and staff are known," Katen-Bahensky said.
