Former UI Business Dean George Daly to Speak Sept. 26

Professor George Daly, former dean of the University of Iowa's Henry B. Tippie College of Business and dean emeritus of the Leonard N. Stern School of Business at New York University, will present the 2003 Howard Bowen Lecture Sept. 26.

The talk, titled "The Simple Economics of MBA Programs," will be given at 3 p.m. in the MidAmerican Energy Colloquium (W401) of the John Pappajohn Business Building (PBB). Following the talk, there will be a reception in the Andersen Galleria, W101 PBB.

The Bowen Lecture, established by the college in 1986 to honor former UI President and renowned economist Howard R. Bowen, provides a platform for individuals who demonstrate the distinction, thoughtfulness, and originality of Howard Bowen to address important issues facing our society.

Daly is serving as visiting professor at the Tippie College of Business this fall. He was dean of the college from 1983 to 1993. During this time, Daly generated both the political and legislative support for the John Pappajohn Business Building and helped raise the private money for the project. Daly also started the Tippie College Board of Visitors, an advisory group of business and government leaders who help the College stay in touch with changing conditions and needs.

Daly served as dean of New York University's Leonard N. Stern School of Business from August 1993 until August 2002. He is the Albert Fingerhut Professor in Urban Entrepreneurial Studies at Stern. With this appointment, he holds the academic chair that was established in May 2002 by Stern Overseer Barry Fingerhut in honor of his late father, Albert Fingerhut. This chair was created to foster the application of business and leadership skills to minority-owned businesses and the not-for-profit sector.

As dean of NYU Stern, Daly presided over a period of unprecedented growth and academic excellence. Under his leadership, NYU Stern launched a $100 million Centennial Campaign, the most ambitious fundraising initiative ever undertaken by the school.

A distinguished scholar, Daly is a specialist in applied microeconomics and the economics of organizations and contracting. He has published extensively in both academic and popular journals and is a member of numerous academic organizations.

Daly earned an A.B. from Miami University in Ohio and both his M.A. and Ph.D. from Northwestern University -- all in economics.
