UI Medical Student Research Day Award Winners

More than 100 medical students at the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine presented their research at the 35th annual Medical Student Research Day held Friday, Sept. 5. The event was organized by the Medical Student Research Council, the student officers of the Iowa Student Medical Research Club (ISMRC) and Peg Nopoulos, M.D., UI associate professor of psychiatry and faculty director of Iowa Medical Student Research Program. Following the presentations, an awards banquet was held at the Sheraton Hotel in Iowa City.

Three named awards, each including a $100 cash prize, were awarded for outstanding oral presentations:

Rob Jackson of Provo, Utah, a second-year student, received the Melvin Marcus Clinical Research Award for his presentation titled, "Determination of Altered Phenotypes in Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma Cell Lines Following VEGF-C Transfection." The Melvin Marcus Clinical Research Award was established by the ISMRC in 1989 to honor the memory of Dr. Melvin L. Marcus, faculty supervisor of the ISMRC for over a decade.

Anne Warrington of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, a first-year student, received the Borts Award for her presentation, "A Cluster of Genes at 19q13 Make a Significant Contribution to Cleft Lip and Palate." The Borts Award was established by the Alpha Psi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Kappa (AKK) Medical Fraternity in 1974 to honor Dr. I. H. Borts, a graduate of the UI College of Medicine and long-time supporter of the AKK.

Adam Espie-Ziemann of Bloomington, Minn., a second-year student, won the Edward Heath Award for his presentation, "The Effects of Acid-Sensing Ion Channel 1 (ASIC1) Following CNS Acidosis." The Edward Heath Award honors Dr. Edward Heath, who was professor and chairman of the UI Department of Biochemistry from 1976 until his death in 1984.

15 prizes of $75 each also were awarded for outstanding poster presentations. The students who won these awards were:

Amanda Bucheit of Boone, Iowa; Rebecca Craig of West Des Moines, Iowa; Lawrence Decker of Washington, Ill.; Matthew Dickson of Fargo, N.D.; Josh Eastvold of Iowa City, Iowa; Ryen Fons of Minnetonka, Minn.; Daniel Gih of Panorama City, Calif.; Ian Kenning of Ottumwa, Iowa; Sandeep Kumar of Clinton, Iowa; Peter Nau of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Anna Peters of LaSalle, Ill.; Martin Potash of Sioux City, Iowa; Jon Van Heukelom of Sibley, Iowa; Heather Wade of Davenport, Iowa; and Phillip Wynn of Los Angeles, Calif.
