Calligraphy Workshop Anticipates Cloud Gate's 'Cursive'
A calligraphy workshop, open to the public by registration, will be held 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, in River Room 1 of the Iowa Memorial Union. The workshop, led by Cheryl Jacobsen of the UI Center for the Book and Jean Wilson of the Des Moines Art Center, has been planned in conjunction with the Nov. 12 performance of "Cursive" by the Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan in Hancher Auditorium.
The workshop, designed for both beginners and experienced calligraphers, will celebrate the creativity and fun of using brushes and ink to explore letter shapes and alphabetic imagery.
The cost of the workshop is $50, and advance registration is required. Call Cheryl Jacobsen at 319-351-6603 to register or for more information.
In "Cursive," co-commissioned by Hancher Auditorium, choreographer Lin Hwai-min explores the connections between the symbolic expressiveness of calligraphy and dance.
Lin, a graduate of the UI Writers' Workshop, says "Dancers try to say something when they move, but what they're saying is ambiguous, uncertain. The Chinese have a metaphor for calligraphy that alludes to this. They call calligraphy a dancing phoenix -- something beautiful, even if you don't understand it."
Tickets for "Cursive" are available from the Hancher box office: 319-335-1160. Long distance is toll-free, 1-800-HANCHER. Tickets may be ordered on-line 24 hours a day, seven days a week through Hancher's website: http://www.uiowa.edu/hancher .
