Public Communication Skills Workshop Offered
The Social Change Training Program of the Women's Resource and Action Center (WRAC) at the University of Iowa will continue this year's series of workshops and seminars with a session focused on public communication skills for activists. The workshop, titled "Speak Up! Speak Out!" will be Saturday, Oct. 25, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Lucas Dodge Room of the Iowa Memorial Union on the UI campus.
Public communication skills are important for anyone who needs to share information with others, or who hopes to persuade others about an issue. Other than the introductory speech class many people may have taken in high school, many activists have paid little attention to the formal consideration of communication skills, especially public speaking. This workshop will cover basic skills to help participants become more comfortable and effective public speakers, whether they are called upon to give a presentation at a board meeting, a city council meeting or a political rally. Topics will include organizing thoughts, analyzing the audience, and developing performance skills. Participants will have opportunities to practice skills in workshopping sessions.
The trainers for this seminar are Joan Faber McAlister and Laurie Haag. Both have taken graduate courses in the University of Iowa Department of Communication Studies and have taught numerous communication courses at the University of Iowa and other institutions.
The fee for the workshop is $10; pre-registration is required. For more information, or to register, please call the Women's Center at 319-335-1486.
