UI Arts Share Program Presents Maia Quartet In Lisbon Oct. 13
The University of Iowa Arts Share program will present a free performance of the Maia Quartet, the resident faculty quartet of the UI School of Music, at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 13 in the Lisbon Public Library.
The performance, hosted by the library and sponsored by Arts Share, is made possible by a grant from Alliant Energy.
Formed in 1990, the Maia Quartet is composed of Amy Kuhlmann Appold (violin), Elizabeth Soper Gutierrez (violin), Elizabeth Oakes (viola) and Hannah Holman (cello).
The Maia Quartet has established itself nationally with performances in major concert halls including Alice Tully Hall in New York, the Kennedy Center Terrace Theatre in Washington, D.C., and Harris Hall at the Aspen Music Festival.
The quartet has gained wide recognition for its educational outreach activities. It has participated in a three-year project in partnership with the Aspen Music Festival under a grant from the Lila Wallace-Readers Digest Foundation aimed at building adult audiences. The members of the quartet have shared their love of music with children under the auspices of Young Audiences, Inc., and the Midori Foundation.
Before coming to the UI, the Maia Quartet served as associate faculty at the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore, Md., and also as resident quartet with the Acadiana Symphony Orchestra in Lafayette, La.
Committed to works of living composers, the Maia Quartet is praised by critics for its "sparkling musical intelligence."
The UI Arts Share program provides artistic resources from the Iowa Center for the Arts to schools and community organizations. The 2003-04 Arts Share roster includes more than 75 faculty and graduate students in music, theater, dance, the visual arts and creative writing.
