Education Diversity Committee Celebrates 'National Coming Out Week'
The University of Iowa College of Education Diversity Committee is sponsoring several events in connection with National Coming Out Week Oct. 6-10, including a diversity film series and a resource table for future educators with information about the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights movement.
All events and activities are free and open to the college, UI community and public and will take place in the Lindquist Center, which houses the UI College of Education, at the corner of Burlington Avenue and Madison Street.
The events are:
Monday, Oct. 6: A bibliography of books and other materials related to LBGT issues will be made available in the UI College of Education's Curriculum Resources Laboratory in N140. And displays will be hung on bulletin boards throughout the building.
Tuesday, Oct. 7: Diversity Film Series and Dialogue with the UI Office of Affirmative Action, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Room 301. Attendees will watch a film and participate in a discussion led by Diane Finnerty, Office of Affirmative Action, about ideas and ways in which teachers can talk with students about homophobia and gay issues.
Thursday, Oct. 9: Resource Table, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., second floor of the
Lindquist Center's north wing. Future educators can find information regarding
Friday, Oct. 10: Safe Zone Training, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the Connie Belin & Jacqueline N. Blank International Center for Gifted Education and Talent Development, Conference Room 210A. Training will be available for College of Education faculty, staff, and students to work toward an inclusive environment.
