UI To Host Conference On Health Care And Young Women
Former Miss America Kate Shindle will be the keynote speaker at an upcoming University of Iowa conference on health care and young women. The conference, "Romance, Risks and Reason" will be Dec. 5-6 at the Holiday Inn Hotel and Conference Center in Coralville.
Registration fees vary for young women, students, adults and health professionals. Contact Karin Brunk at 319-353-5492 for details.
The conference is targeted towards young women and health professionals who care for them, as well as parents, guardians, teachers and other adults.
Topics to be discussed include behavioral and mood disorders, body image, addictions and sexuality, and gender issues. The program aims to understand why young women are attracted to certain high-risk behaviors to gain appreciation for the consequences of young women's behaviors, and to assist young women in taking control of the choices they make in their lives.
The program is organized to include sessions addressing specific topics that will be followed by separate, parallel sessions to permit information exchange and discussion between professionals and young women.
Shindle was crowned Miss America in 1998. An AIDS activist, she dedicated time and effort to speak with students across the country about AIDS education and prevention. Following her year as Miss America, Shindle began a career in musical theater, starring on Broadway in "Jekyll and Hyde" and in an international tour of "Cabaret."
Conference sponsors include Pfizer Inc.; the UI Office of the Associate Provost for Health Sciences; the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine; the Women in Science and Engineering Program at the UI; and the UI Colleges of Dentistry, Nursing, Pharmacy and Public Health.
