Dance Marathon Seeks Spirit Dancers For 2004

The University of Iowa Dance Marathon is seeking alumni, faculty, staff and friends of the university to participate in the Spirit Dancer program for people who aren't students but still want to be a part of Dance Marathon.

Spirit Dancers can meet the dancers and families they are supporting in person and are invited to attend Dance Marathon. Each Spirit Dancer receives a free T-shirt and are eligible for other awards depending on the amount of money each raises. In addition, interested Spirit Dancers will have an opportunity to correspond with a group of dancers to provide inspiration and support prior to the event, and to meet these dancers at the marathon.

Spirit Dancers must also raise a minimum of $200 by Dec. 1.

For more information on or to register for the Spirit Dancer program, or to make a contribution to Dance Marathon, contact Brecka Putnam, assistant Spirit Dancer director, at superbrecka@hotmail.com or Kerry Fear, development director, at dmdevel@blue.weeg.uiowa.edu.

The University of Iowa Dance Marathon is a student-run organization that provides financial and emotional support to families served by the Children's Hospital of Iowa at The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, with an emphasis on the pediatric oncology unit. The funds raised by Dance Marathon support a variety of special projects, including direct family support, hospital unit support and research incentives. These include projects such as hospital bill assistance, seasonal family events, funds to develop renovation of units, computer technology for patient rooms, tutor program for patients and research grants.

The University of Iowa Dance Marathon is one of the largest student-run philanthropies in the United States. More than $2.8 million has been raised by Dance Marathon in its first nine years of existence. In 2004, dancers will celebrate Dance Marathon's tenth anniversary.
