Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center To Host Cancer Survivor Event

Each year in June a day is set aside to honor the millions of cancer survivors around the world who lead rewarding lives, and also to honor the memory of those who lived well but ultimately succumbed to their cancer.

Patients and their loved ones, faculty and staff members of the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Iowa will observe National Cancer Survivors' Day from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, June 8 on the patio of the John Colloton Pavilion at UI Hospitals and Clinics.

"We are calling our event 'The Art of Living,'" said George Weiner, M.D., director of Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center and C.E. Block Professor of Cancer Research. "We honor the lives of all of our patients, not only those who survived cancer but those who faced the disease with dignity and courage."

The National Cancer Survivor Day observance will feature interactive music therapy activities, performances by cancer-surviving artists and a dove release. In addition, muralist Deanne Warnholtz Wortman will lead attendees in preparing a mural that eventually become a part of the construction fence for the new Center of Excellence in Image-Guided Radiation Therapy. Patients will also share their stories of survival.

Refreshments will be served. For more information, contact the Cancer Information Service at 319-356-3000 or toll free at 1-800-237-1225.

Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center is Iowa's only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated comprehensive cancer center. NCI-designated comprehensive cancer centers are recognized as the leaders in developing new approaches to cancer prevention and cancer care, conducting leading edge research and educating the public about cancer.
