UI College Of Pharmacy To Honor Alumni, Faculty May 15
The University of Iowa College of Pharmacy will honor two alumni with Distinguished Alumni Awards and recognize two faculty members for their contributions during the UI College of Pharmacy Senior Dinner and Awards Banquet May 15. The banquet will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Sheraton Inn in Iowa City.
Jordan Cohen, dean of the College of Pharmacy, will present Distinguished Alumni Awards to Ray Buser, a 1969 graduate of the college, and T.J. Johnsrud, a 1966 graduate. Cohen also will present emeritus professor David Carew with the Honorary Alumnus Award, and Robert J. Linhardt, professor of medicinal and natural products chemistry, with the Commemorative Medallion.
Ray Buser is the founder and president of CarePro Health Services, based in Cedar Rapids, which owns and operates five community pharmacies, as well as a naturopathic pharmacy, throughout central and eastern Iowa. He has been an innovator in practice throughout his career and is continuously active in state and national pharmacy organizations. He has been particularly influential in policy matters relating to pharmaceutical care - a patient-centered, outcomes-oriented pharmacy practice in which the pharmacist works with the patient and the patient's other health care providers to promote health, prevent disease and oversee medication use to assure that drug therapy regimens are safe and effective.
T.J. Johnsrud is president of Pharmacy Associates, Ltd., based in Nevada, Iowa. He is a leader in the pharmaceutical care movement in Iowa, which led to the development of the Iowa Center for Pharmaceutical Care, and he brought national visibility to Iowa's pharmacy profession. Johnsrud also is a member of the UI College of Pharmacy Dean's Advisory Council.
David Carew, emeritus professor in the college's Department of Medicinal and Natural Products Chemistry, is a graduate of Massachusetts College of Pharmacy. A member of the UI College of Pharmacy faculty for 39 years, he also served as assistant dean for undergraduate affairs and as acting dean in 1984. Carew was elected honorary president of the Iowa Pharmacy Association in 1994-95. He and his wife, Shirley, remain active in College alumni and reunion activities.
Robert Linhardt, the F. Wendell Miller Distinguished Professor of Medicinal and Natural Products Chemistry, has been a UI faculty member for 20 years. He also holds UI appointments in chemistry and chemical engineering, and he is internationally known for his research on the chemistry and biochemistry of heparin, a drug that prevents blood clotting.
