Medical Students To Receive Award For Reading Program May 8
The Iowa City Area Chamber of Commerce will honor third-year students in the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine May 8.
The Chamber will present the Partnership Showcase Award for Excellence in Education to the students for their "Read With the Doctors" program at Grant Wood Elementary in Iowa City.
The "Read With the Doctors" volunteer program was developed by the medical students as a way to promote literacy to schoolchildren and to foster a positive relationship between children and doctors. Over the past academic school year, the medical students have volunteered four hours per week, offering mentorship, individual reading assistance and one-on-one tutoring to Grant Wood students.
"This program has helped create better understanding between youngsters and physicians," said Jerold Woodhead, M.D., the Sahai Family Associate Professor of Medical Education at the UI. "Our medical students were able to promote reading and interact with healthy children in a non-clinical environment, which helps overcome the 'white coat syndrome' that many kids experience when dealing with doctors or other health care professionals. Our students should feel extremely proud of their efforts."
Nearly all of the 130 students from UI Carver College of Medicine class of 2004 participated in the program over the course of the past school year.
The award ceremony will be from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Conference Center in Coralville.
