UI Student Engineers Build, Paddle Concrete Canoes
(Student Name) of (hometown), a student in the University of Iowa College of Engineering, recently participated in the April 2003 American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Midwest Regional Concrete Canoe Competition among six Midwestern universities at Lake Macbride beach. He/she (see below for role in canoe races).
Each team writes a paper before the competition, gives presentations, and the submits its work for aesthetic judging at the beach before the races and a durability check. The formal competition includes four races with two paddlers: men's sprint, men's long distance, women's sprint and women's long distance. The fifth race is a co-ed sprint with four paddlers.
In addition to the Iowa team, which finished in second place, universities represented in the competition included Iowa State University, the University of Minnesota, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, the University of North Dakota and South Dakota State University.

WAUKON: Adam Searcy, presented and raced in the men's sprint.
FREEPORT: Ben Cole, raced in the men's distance and coed sprint.
GLENCOE: Denise Armbruster, raced in the women's distance.
HAMILTON: Ashley Haskins, raced in women's distance.
ORLAND PARK: Dave Carpenter, completed mix design and raced in the coed sprint.
ST. LOUIS: Zach Langle, raced in the men's distance.
MILWAUKEE: Lindsay Kaufmann, raced in the women's sprint.
