RVAP Plans Sexual Assault Awareness Month Events

The Rape Victim Advocacy Program (RVAP) is planning a number of local events in April in recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Events include:

April 1, 2: "Rape Is..." a 30-minute documentary exploring the meanings and consequences of rape; Bijou Theater; time TBA on the Bijou web site, http://www.uiowa.edu/~bijou/

April 7: Kick-off event for National Victims' Rights Week featuring J. Patrick White, the Johnson County Attorney, and Vicki Crompton, co-author of "Saving Beauty from the Beast;" 5 p.m. Iowa City Public Library, meeting room A; Sponsored by the Johnson County Victim Advisory Board

April 9: National Shout Out Against Sexual Violence, a nationwide event raising voices against sexual violence; Anne Lahey, Assistant County Attorney and Karla Miller, Executive Director of the Rape Victim Advocacy Program will speak about perpetrator treatment and accountability; 7-9 p.m. at the Iowa Memorial Union Wheelroom.

April 22: The Clothesline Project, is a visual display of shirts created by a woman survivor of violence or the family and friends of a woman who has been murdered; 10 a.m.-8 p.m., mini-park in the downtown Pedestrian Mall. Rain date is April 28.

April 22: Iowa Sexual Abuse Candlelight Vigil, held in conjunction with the Clothesline Project; 7 to 8 p.m., mini-park in the downtown Pedestrian Mall. Vigils will be held simultaneously in several communities across Iowa. Rain date is April 28.

April 24: Take Back the Night Rally; 6 to 9 p.m., College Green Park. Organized by RVAP and Women's Resource and Action Center. Co-Sponsored by Domestic Violence Intervention Program, Emma Goldman Clinic, and the Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance.

April 26: 4th Annual Divas and Deserts, a celebration of women, music and sweets, featuring The Mad River Band; desserts from local restaurants, and root beer donated by Stone City Brewery; 7-10 p.m. Montgomery Hall, Johnson County Fairgrounds. Please contact RVAP at 335-6001 for tickets.

April 30: Art of Survival, a display honoring the creativity of survivors of sexual violence; artwork may include, but is not limited to, music, drama, visual art, dance, poetry, sculpture, and prose; 7 to 9 p.m. Iowa City Senior Center; anyone interested in sharing artwork should contact RVAP at 335-6001.
