Hancher Hosts Children's Art Exhibition March 30-April 16

The University of Iowa Hancher Auditorium lobby will be the site of the 21st annual Children's Art Exhibit, featuring art by elementary students in the Iowa City Community Schools March 30 through April 16.

The Hancher Guild volunteer organization will host a free reception honoring the artists and their teachers, 2-4 p.m. Sunday, April 6.

In addition to free refreshments, the reception will feature performances by violin students from the Preucil School, piano students of Nancy Cree, orchestral students from Northwest Junior High and a choir from Willowwind School.

The exhibition will be available for viewing during all events in Hancher, as well as during the regular business hours of the Hancher Showcase gift shop -- 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Wednesdays.

Hancher events during the exhibition are Inti-Illimani at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 30; a free Iowa Communications Network master class featuring the Tallis Scholars at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 10; the Tallis Scholars concert at 8 p.m. Friday, April 11; Keith Brion as Sousa with the UI Symphony Band at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 15; and the Stuttgart Ballet's "Romeo and Juliet" at 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, April 15 and 16.

The district's 14 arts teachers will select works by students in all 17 of the district's elementary schools for display. Last year's exhibition featured more than 800 works of art. The artists are also honored with certificates and ribbons at award ceremonies at each school.

"The exhibit usually includes printmaking, painting, drawing, weaving, metal tooling, scratchboard and collage, to mention a few," says Becky Kobos, who is coordinating the exhibit for the Iowa City Community School District. "This exhibit is truly a celebration of art produced by children. It is wonderful to be able to share the students' joy in creating art with the community."
