Nursing Students Host Conference On Nurse Recruitment, Retention

Faced with entering the workforce knowing there is a shortage of nurses to care for patients, and with research indicating that trend will continue well into the future, University of Iowa nursing students have dedicated the 26th annual Progressive Nursing Day April 2 to recruitment and retention of nurses.

The theme of the half-day conference, "Igniting the Spirit of Nursing," keeps pace with recent efforts by the nursing profession to teach nurses how to promote nursing and recruit others into the field. The keynote address, "Selling Nursing," will be delivered by May Wykle, Ph.D., dean of nursing at Case Western Reserve University in Ohio. The keynote address begins at 8:30 a.m. in the Main Ballroom at the Iowa Memorial Union on the UI campus.

Other health care professions, policy makers and private corporations have joined in the effort to recruit more nurses. Health care product giant Johnson & Johnson made a substantial contribution to the cause when it launched a $20 million campaign called "The Campaign for Nursing's Future" during the 2002 Winter Olympics. Wykle currently serves on that campaign's advisory board.

Other presenters include Linda Everett, Ph.D., associate director and chief nursing officer at UI Hospitals and Clinics, and Melanie Dreher, Ph.D., Kelting Dean and Professor of the UI College of Nursing. Everett and Dreher will discuss nursing retention. A panel of nurses employed by UI Hospitals and Clinics will discuss the positive benefits of being a nurse.

Students, educators and practicing professionals from nursing or related fields, individuals thinking about nursing as a career, and the general public are encouraged to attend. Continuing Education credits are available for full-time attendance. Pre-registration is not required; attendees may register at the door. Admission prices are $5 for UI students and visiting nursing students, $10 for non-CEU credit participants and $20 for CEU credit participants.

Progressive Nursing Day is organized by the UI Association of Nursing Students (UIANS), an undergraduate student leadership organization, in collaboration with faculty and members of Sigma Theta Tau, Gamma Chapter, the local chapter of the international honor society of nursing. UI Student Government provides sponsorship, as well. For more information, contact the UIANS office at (319) 335-7002.
