Tuesday News Briefing Is On 'Cancer in Iowa: 2003'

The annual "Cancer in Iowa" report issued by the State Health Registry of Iowa will be released at a news conference at 10:45 a.m. Tuesday, March 4 in the Seebohm Conference Room, 283 Eckstein Medical Research Building (EMRB), on the University of Iowa campus.

"Cancer in Iowa: 2003" is the State Health Registry's latest report on the status of cancer across Iowa. The report includes estimates of cancer diagnoses and deaths in Iowa for 2003 and lists the most common types of cancer. This year's report also includes a special focus on colorectal cancer.

Charles F. Lynch, M.D., Ph.D., UI professor of epidemiology, and medical director of the Iowa Cancer Registry, will present the report findings. A UI physician will discuss colorectal cancer. One or more individuals who had a colonoscopy (screening for colorectal cancer) and/or survived colon cancer are scheduled to be available for comment.

Copies of "Cancer in Iowa: 2003" and CD-ROMs of graphs/figures from the report will be available at the conference. A question-and-answer session for reporters will be held after the brief presentations.

More than 150 hospitals, clinics and medical laboratories across Iowa, in addition to referral facilities in neighboring states, contribute data to the State Health Registry, which is based at the UI College of Public Health.
