Pearson Educational Measurement Makes $250,000 Gift For New UI Pomerantz Center
Pearson Educational Measurement of Iowa City, celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, has given $250,000 to the University of Iowa Foundation to support construction of the new UI Pomerantz Center, a comprehensive facility that will provide a breadth of academic, career and recruiting resources for prospective and current students and alumni.
In recognition of the gift for the new Pomerantz Center, which was funded largely by a $10 million naming gift from Marvin A. and Rose Lee Pomerantz of Des Moines, the building's career-services library will be named the Pearson Career Services Library.
"This gift celebrates our heritage and our enduring relationship with the University of Iowa," said Steve Kromer, vice president and general manager of Pearson Educational Measurement. "We recognize the organizational benefits that are derived from a high-quality educational experience, and the university is a primary sources for our most important asset -- our employees.
"In addition, the university provides our employees with a world-class venue to extend their professional development by participating in lectures, business roundtables and advanced-degree programs. As the University of Iowa helped and nurtured a fledging organization that grew and prospered into what it is today, in turn, we'd like to help our founding institution continue to grow and prosper as one of the foremost educational institutions in the world."
Said UI President David J. Skorton, "The career-services library made possible through Pearson's generous gift is a fitting tribute to the company's long and positive history with the university. This resource will benefit not just the University of Iowa, which is a key partner in the state's economic development, but also the Iowa business community and employers like Pearson."
Pearson Educational Measurement is a leading provider of high-quality educational assessment services offering large-scale program management, software systems design, performance-assessment scoring and paper and electronic test delivery, processing and reporting.
The company was founded as the Measurement Research Center in 1953 by the University of Iowa and UI Professor Everet Franklin Lindquist, developer of the Iowa Test of Basic Skills. Since 1968, the Iowa City operations have been owned by Westinghouse Electric Corporation, National Computer Systems (NCS) and now London-based Pearson.
Its gift for the Pomerantz Center is in honor of the company's 50th anniversary and long-standing ties with the University of Iowa.
The 70,000-square-foot Pomerantz Center will be located across from the John Pappajohn Business Building at the corner of Market Street and the T. Anne Cleary Walkway, in the heart of the UI campus.
It will serve students in the UI's Henry B. Tippie College of Business and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences by housing a variety of career-related services, including the Marvin A. and Rose Lee Pomerantz Career Services Program, MBA Career Services, the Executive MBA Program, the Admission Visitors Center, the UI Alumni Association's Career Information Network and the Academic Advising Center.
Pearson's gift is part of the UI's $850 million comprehensive campaign, which will run through 2005 and is being conducted under the guidance of the UI Foundation. Named "Good. Better. Best. Iowa: The Campaign to Advance Our Great University," the seven-year effort is raising private funds to help launch a variety of initiatives across the university, substantially increase the number of UI scholarships and endowed faculty positions, support new educational and research facilities, build the UI's endowment and fund outreach and service programs to benefit Iowans.
The UI Foundation is acknowledged by the UI as a preferred channel for private contributions that benefit all areas of the university. For more information about the "Good. Better. Best.
