Ponseti Honored For Contributions In Orthopaedics

The American Orthopaedic Association (AOA) and Zimmer, Inc. honored Ignacio V. Ponseti, M.D., University of Iowa professor emeritus of orthopaedics and rehabilitation, with the second annual AOA-Zimmer Award for Distinguished Contributions to Orthopaedics at the 116th annual AOA meeting, held June 11-14 in Charleston, S.C.

The award recognizes outstanding leaders in orthopaedic surgery whose work results in sustained and substantial contributions and leadership through clinical, educational and research means. Ponseti received the $50,000 grant to honor his role in enhancing and shaping the specialty of orthopaedics.

Ponseti is known for his clinical expertise with pediatric orthopaedics and non-surgical treatment of infants with congenital clubfoot. His research led to the development of the "Ponseti method," which uses manipulations and casting rather than surgical methods to correct clubfoot in infants.

Ponseti's research interests also include the pathology of congenital hip dislocation, development of elastin in spinal ligaments of mammals and elastin changes in scoliosis.

Ponseti received his medical degree from the University of Barcelona in Barcelona, Spain, and completed his residency at the UI.

Founded in 1887, the AOA is the oldest national orthopaedic association in the world. Its mission is to identify, develop, engage and recognize leadership to further the art and science of orthopaedics.

Zimmer Holdings, Inc., is a global leader in the design, development, manufacturing and marketing of reconstructive orthopaedic implants and trauma products. Zimmer plays no role in the selection process and has no control over the use of the funds granted.
