UI Museum Of Art Will Offer New Program For K-6 Students July 19, 26
The University of Iowa Museum of Art will offer the Thursday Night Club, a new program for young museum visitors who have completed grades K through 6, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays, June 19 and 26.
The Thursday Night Art Club will provide an opportunity for the young participants to participate in art activities that are loosely based on the museum's extensive African collection. Through explorations of a variety of art media, participants will make a work of art each week, as well as participate in a related activity.
On Thursday, June 19, children will make African statues, with emphasis on statues associated with divination. Students will create their own wooden statue that, as appropriate for each child's age, will represent a modern fortune-teller or a game of chance.
On Thursday, June 26, children will make African textile art. Students will make their own tunics from second-hand cloth pieces. For this activity, the students and teachers may use the previously created fortune-tellers to help decide which age group may use what colors and materials.
The cost of the program is $5 for members of the museum and $10 for non-members. For further information or registration materials, interested students or their parents should contact Brenda Lyle at (319) 335-1724, or by e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org. Space in the class will be limited, so advance registration is recommended.
The UI Museum of Art, located on North Riverside Drive in Iowa City, is open noon to 10 p.m. Thursdays. Admission is free. Public metered parking is available in UI parking lots west and north of the museum.
