UI, VAMC Dialysis Programs Appoint New Director
Rebecca Hegeman, M.D., University of Iowa Health Care associate professor in the division of nephrology in the department of internal medicine, has been appointed medical director of the University of Iowa and Iowa City Veterans Affairs Medical Center Dialysis Programs. The appointment is effective August 1, 2003.
Hegeman replaces William Lawton, M.D., UI associate professor of internal medicine, who has served in the post since 1987. The Dialysis Programs serve patients with acute kidney problems as well as stable patients requiring dialysis. The dialysis unit at UI Hospital and Clinics has one of the largest home dialysis populations in the country.
Hegeman received her medical degree from the UI, where she also completed a residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in nephrology. She joined the UI medical faculty in 1993 and has contributed substantially to the success of the dialysis program. In addition to existing clinical duties and the new directorship, Hegeman coordinates the ambulatory blood pressure service and the division staffing schedules. Her teaching responsibilities include serving as a medical student community faculty director for the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine. Hegeman also is a member of the UI Faculty Senate and Faculty Council.
Lawton, who also is a staff physician with the Iowa City VAMC, will resume his responsibilities in patient care, teaching and clinical research. He was instrumental in establishing the first satellite dialysis unit for UI Hospitals and Clinics in 1996. The program now has five outpatient units to better serve Iowans. Lawton also oversaw the creation of new inpatient dialysis units at the VAMC and UI Hospitals and Clinics, and he helped establish independent dialysis units in eastern Iowa. Lawton is considered the senior medical advisor for the Iowa dialysis network.
