WSUI, WOI Announce Joint Talk Show Venture
WSUI's "Iowa Talks" and WOI's "Talk of Iowa" will begin a cooperative effort between the University of Iowa and Iowa State University's pubic radio stations beginning Monday, July 28. In the first arrangement of its kind involving a daily program, the combined talk show will be broadcast live on the two stations, WSUI-AM 910 serving Eastern Iowa, and WOI-AM 640 serving Central and Western Iowa.
WSUI Program Director Dennis Reese and WOI Program Director Dave Becker (a former WSUI student assistant) say that in this era of waning state resources, the simulcast creates a "win-win" situation for both stations.
Both programs will now use the name "Talk of Iowa." It will air on both stations from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. weekdays. The WOI-produced segment will air first hour and the WSUI-produced segment will air in the second hour.
Both talk shows feature similar formats, with toll-free phone lines available for the statewide audience. "Talk of Iowa," hosted by Katherine Perkins, has been broadcast for many years on WOI and features eclectic topics, often using the resources of Iowa's land grant university, such as veterinary medicine, agriculture, wildlife, horticulture and meteorology.
"Iowa Talks," hosted by a variety of WSUI producers, debuted in August, 2000, and often takes advantage of the resources offered at the University of Iowa, with guests who are authorities in such areas as medicine/public health, creative writing and the liberal arts and sciences.
Staffs at both stations have tentative plans to invite both university presidents, David Skorton and Gregory Geoffroy, to appear on the program every month.
WSUI and WOI are "heritage" radio stations, both in their 84th year of broadcasting to Iowa.
