Paulson Receives Grant For Aging-Related Research

Henry Paulson, M.D., Ph.D., University of Iowa associate professor of neurology, has received a Paul Beeson Physician Faculty Scholar in Aging Research Program grant from the American Federation of Aging Research. Paulson was one of 11 physicians honored with Beeson grants this year.

The grant, effective as of July 1, will provide $450,000 over the next three years. Established in 1995, Beeson grants are awarded annually to outstanding physicians committed to academic careers in aging-related research, teaching and practice.

Currently, Paulson's research focuses on potential approaches to slow or halt the development of neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. Specifically, by using animal models of neurological disease, Paulson is investigating whether manipulation of gene expression can prevent or slow disease development. These studies may provide powerful tools for specific gene manipulation and may begin to answer questions about the molecular events that contribute to neurological disease.

Paulson performs these studies in collaboration with Beverly Davidson, Ph.D., Roy J. Carver Professor of Internal Medicine, and UI professor of physiology and biophysics, and neurology.

Paulson's research interests also include movement disorders, therapeutics for neurodegenerative disease and the genetics of hereditary ataxias.

Paulson came to the UI in 1997 following a faculty appointment at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center, Philadelphia. He received his medical and doctoral degrees from Yale University School of Medicine in 1990.

The Beeson grant is sponsored by the John A. Hartford Foundation, the Commonwealth Fund, the Alliance for Aging Research and the Starr Foundation.
