Iowa Young Writers' Studio Seeks Applicants

The University of Iowa's Division of Continuing Education is seeking applicants for its Fourth annual Iowa Young Writers' Studio, a two-week summer program that offers high school students from Iowa and across the country a chance to focus on creative writing. The Studio will hold two sessions this year, June 22 to July 5 and July 13-26, on the UI main campus.

Students at the Iowa Young Writers' Studio choose a single course of study in fiction, poetry or creative writing (a mix of fiction, poetry, creative non-fiction and/or drama). Daily activities include morning literature seminars, afternoon workshops and individual conferences with instructors. The program also hosts a variety of visiting readers and offers special evening and weekend activities, which last year included one-day projects at the UI Center for the Book and the KSUI/WSUI radio station.

"This is a completely amazing program, with an atmosphere conducive to creativity," says one former student, in an article highlighting the Studio in the Iowa Alumni Magazine's October 2002 issue. "It's about taking writing seriously, not people taking themselves seriously...It changed my life."

Instructors for the Studio include Thisbe Nissen, Ben Doyle and other graduates of the Iowa Writers' Workshop. Last year, high school students from 24 states, including Iowa, New York, California and Texas, participated in the program.

The cost for the Iowa Young Writers' Studio is $1,375, which includes housing in the University of Iowa Residence Halls, board, instruction fees, textbooks and transportation to and from the Cedar Rapids airport. Some financial aid is available.

Applications to attend the program are due April 1. For more information, visit http://www.uiowa.edu/~iyws or contact program director Trish Walsh at (319)335-4209 or mailto:iyws@uiowa.edu.
