UI names new Facilities Services Group director

Donald J. Guckert, director of planning, design and construction at the University of Missouri-Columbia, has been named University of Iowa associate vice president and director of the Facilities Services Group (FSG), pending approval by the Board of Regents, State of Iowa.

Guckert will assume his new duties March 1 at an annual salary of $146,000.

"We are pleased to welcome Don Guckert to the University of Iowa" said Doug True, University of Iowa vice president for finance and university services. "He has Big Ten roots with three degrees from Penn State University and has led complex operations at the University of Missouri. He impressed the search committee and many others at UI in the course of his interviews."

The FSG director is responsible for a large organization encompassing campus planning, construction, operation and maintenance of facilities and campus grounds, and the utility systems. Utilities include electricity generation and distribution, water supply production and distribution as well as providing heat and cooling to all university facilities.

Guckert has served the University of Missouri in several management positions over the past 16 years. As director of the Department of Planning, Design & Construction, he supervised a staff of 150 people and oversaw an annual average construction workload of $100 million.

The new FSG director has a master's degree in engineering, a bachelor of science degree in engineering, and a bachelor of arts degree in general arts and sciences, all from Penn State University.

Guckert has been active in the Association of Higher Education Facilities Officers, winning that association's 1998 President's Award and its 2002 Effective and Innovative Practices Award. A licensed professional engineer, he is also a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers, the Society for College and University Planning, and the Missouri Builders Association. He is also an active national and local member of the Construction Specifications Institute and serves on the Editorial Advisory Board for the Institute's publication, The Construction Specifier.

True provided a special thanks to UI Business Manager Drew Ives for his service over the past year as interim FSG director. "Drew deserves our gratitude for taking on the FSG director's duties in addition to his significant responsibilities as business manger," True said. "We appreciate all that he has done and will continue to value his counsel on the many facilities issues facing the university."
