Hillcrest renovation project ends Jan. 20 with C Store grand opening

A three-year, $10 million renovation of Hillcrest Residence Hall's student dining facilities and public spaces comes to an end Jan. 20 with the opening of the Hillcrest C Store.

The new store will offer students and Hillcrest visitors a wide variety of traditional convenience store items, including food, soda, sundries and a refrigerated section. The store has been modeled on a similar convenience store that has been operating successfully in Mayflower Residence Hall for several years.

The C Store is yet another dining option students have as a result of the $10 million makeover of Hillcrest that eliminated the traditional cafeteria-style dining format. The most significant change was the addition of a food court in 2000 that gave students a choice of as many as 20 different types of food offered at eight food stations.

The project also led to significant renovations of most of Hillcrest's public spaces, including the lobby and administrative offices.

The new C Store's hours will be 7 a.m. to midnight, Monday through Thursday; 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, and 11 a.m. to midnight Sunday.

Hillcrest's dining room will also institute a continuous service line from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, allowing students to eat their meals whenever they choose during the day. Previously, students could only eat their meals during set times throughout the day. The traditional dining format will continue to be used during the weekend.

The Hawkeye Express Grab and Go carryout meal service that was temporarily instituted to allow students to eat their meals elsewhere while the dining room was under construction will also be discontinued now that construction is complete.

A similar makeover of Burge Residence Hall's dining facilities and public spaces is underway. Completion is expected in 2004.
