UI Law Professor Sidel To Lecture At University Of London
Mark Sidel, associate professor in the University of Iowa College of Law, has been named the W.G. Hart Lecturer at the School of Oriental and African Studies in the University of London for 2003.
Sidel will deliver the W.G. Hart Public Lecture during the week of March 10 at the University of London, discussing law and society in Vietnam. He will also present other lectures and classes during that week in the SOAS Law Department, discussing Vietnamese law and society, as well as philanthropy and civil society.
"This overseas honor recognizes the quality and impact of Professor Sidel's work in Asian and comparative law, and more generally reflects the quality and breadth of the College of Law's long-standing work in international and comparative law," said William Hines, dean of the college of law. "We're pleased he can provide such a high level of expertise to our own students on a regular basis."
The Hart Lectureship is named for a prominent English legal scholar of trusts and property.
Sidel, who joined the College of Law's faculty in 2000, is also affiliated with the Obermann Center for Advanced Studies as a research scholar in 2002-2003. He previously served with the Ford Foundation in Beijing, Bangkok, Hanoi and New Delhi and has written extensively on Vietnamese and Chinese law and on philanthropy and nonprofit institutions.
