UI Sets Events For Prepare Our Daughters For Life Program
The University of Iowa will celebrate Prepare Our Daughters for Life day with a series of programs for UI faculty and staff and their daughters on Tuesday, March 4.
"Since 1993, Prepare Our Daughters for Life has been providing children with a gender-specific learning environment to explore their strengths and opportunities," said Charlotte Westerhaus, assistant to the president and director of the UI Office of Affirmative Action. "It is a companion piece to the university's Prepare Our Sons for Life event scheduled each fall."
She points out that events are scheduled to coincide with conference days in the Iowa City Community School District so students will not miss any school to participate in Prepare Our Daughters for Life.
Children ages 10 and older whose parents or adult sponsors are employed at UI are encouraged to participate in the day's activities. This year's event will provide the opportunity to meet one-on-one with female mentors working in a variety of occupations at UI. Participants will be matched with UI staff and faculty representing Computer/Technology, Business & Leadership, Performing Arts, Visual Arts, Journalism/Media, Skilled Trades, Health Sciences, Sciences, Sports, Education/Teaching and Community Activism.
Parents will also have the option of having their own child shadow them during the morning.
Participants will shadow their mentors from 8:30 a.m. to noon, followed by a luncheon for the mentors, children and their families in the second floor ballroom of the Iowa Memorial Union.
The program is sponsored by the UI Office of Affirmative Action, UI WorkLife and the Office of the Provost. Other supporters of the program include Women in Science and Engineering, the Women's Resource and Action Center, and the Iowa Women's Foundation.
