Brand U Seminar Helps Students Market Themselves to Employers
At a seminar on Feb. 23, students can learn how to build a leading brand -- one called "Brand U." This program is designed to help students market themselves to employers to get the jobs that they want most.
The University of Iowa chapter of the American Marketing Association (AMA), in association with Des Moines-based Porter and Associates, will present the personal branding seminar Feb. 23 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. in Room W10 of the John Pappajohn Business Building (PBB) on the UI campus.
In their presentation, Marshall T. Porter of Porter and Associates and Dave Collins, lecturer in the department of marketing at the UI Tippie College of Business will define branding and how people can identify their brand identity and target market. They will also discuss how to build a personal brand, give some practical examples on how to communicate the brand, and how to evaluate it over time.
Brand U is designed to teach better self-definition. "We want to encourage people to break out of their resumes and be more than just another name on another piece of paper. Everyone has a grade point average, a resume and a cover letter, but people with personal brands are few and far between. A personal brand is a value-added method of differentiating yourself from the rest," said Ty Young, direct marketing coordinator of the UI AMA chapter.
Following the seminar, there will be a mini-career fair where students can network with company representatives on a personal basis.
Registration fee is $10 for non-AMA members and $5 for AMA members. To register for this seminar, sign up online at http://www.iowaama.org/brandu/ and pay at the door.Registration will also be available at tables outside W151 PBB by Pat’s Diner on Feb.18, 19 and 20 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
