Local High School Students Perform In Honor Band At UI Feb. 16

Students from (hometown) are among 109 student musicians from 34 Iowa high schools selected to play in the 2003 Iowa Honor Band at the University of Iowa School of Music.

The Iowa Honor Band will present a free concert at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16 in Hancher Auditorium on the UI campus. The Sunday concert, under the direction of guest conductor Mark Camphouse, will conclude the students' participation in the annual Honor Band Weekend at the UI.

(Year in school, name(s), instrument(s)), will represent (name of school) at the festival. The high-school band director is (name).

During the Honor Band Weekend, students attend rehearsals of the Honor Band with the guest conductor and receive instruction on their instruments. They also attend a concert by the UI Symphony Band, the top wind ensemble at the UI School of Music, under UI Director of Bands Myron Welch. That concert, at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, in Hancher Auditorium, is also free and open to the public.

Members of the high school Honor Band brass section will be featured playing with the UI Symphony Band on that concert, which will also include Camphouse's work "The Shining City," with the composer as narrator.

For its Feb. 16 concert, the Honor Band will perform the Toccata by Girolamo Frescobaldi, arranged for winds by Earl Slocum; a band arrangement of Pavel Chsenikov's "Salvation is Created"; Camphouse's "In Memoriam," which is based on "Salvation is Created"; Variations on a Korean Folk Song, a contemporary concert-band classic by John Barnes Chance; and "Clowns" by Philip Parker.

Camphouse has been director of bands at Radford (Va.) University since 1984. A native of Chicago, he was a serious composer in his teens, and the Colorado Philharmonic premiered his First Symphony when he only 17. He received his formal musical training at Northwestern University. His works for band have been performed in the United States and abroad and have been recorded on the Albany, Citadel and Summit labels.

Camphouse has served as guest conductor, lecturer and clinician in 38 states, Canada and Europe. He is an elected member of the American Bandmasters Association and serves as coordinator of the National Band Association Young Composer Mentor Project. He has received Radford University's highest faculty honor, the Dedmon Award for Professorial Excellence, as well as the 2002 Outstanding Faculty Award of the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia, which recognizes faculty at the states colleges and universities for demonstrated excellence in teaching, research and public service.

Honor Band members are chosen by the staff of the UI band department on the basis of recommendations from their high school band directors, who are invited to nominate their best musicians.

The School of Music is part of the Division of Performing Arts in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
