UI Journalism Student Wins National Award

University of Iowa senior Ryan Foley has won fourth place in the in-depth category of a national collegiate journalism competition sponsored by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation.

Foley, a Davenport native who is the editor of The Daily Iowan, won a $750 scholarship for his article, "UI Researcher Lied on Resume," which was published Aug. 26, 2002 in the Daily Iowan. The article is on the Daily Iowan web site, http://www.dailyiowan.com/main.cfm?include=detail&storyid=262579

The UI School of Journalism and Mass Communication in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences will receive a $750 matching grant for Foley's effort.

Foley's award along with UI winners in previous categories in the year-long competition gives the UI fourth-place standing overall among the 105 colleges and universities whose students have submitted entries.

Some 80 students from 45 colleges and universities entered the in-depth writing competition. The foundation sponsors six writing, three photojournalism, two radio broadcast news and two television broadcast news competitions each academic year, beginning in October and ending in April. The competition year culminates in June with the National Writing, Photojournalism and Broadcast News Championships, and is open to selected winning students from the monthly competitions who also receive additional awards.

The Hearst Journalism Awards Program is presented annually under the auspices of the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication (ASJMC) with full funding by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation. The program's mission is to encourage and support excellence in journalism and journalism education in America's colleges and universities. This is the 43rd year of competitions, in which more than $400,000 in scholarships and grants will be awarded to students and schools.
