John Schacht to Receive Top Librarian Award
John Schacht, a reference librarian at the UI Libraries, is the second recipient of the Arthur Benton Reference Services Professional Development Award, presented biennially to a UI Libraries professional staff member who has demonstrated outstanding commitment in providing reference services.
A reception honoring Schacht will be Monday, Feb. 17 at 3:30 p.m. in the North Exhibition Lobby of the Main Library.
Schacht was nominated for the award by Linda Kerber, the May Brodbeck Professor in the Liberal Arts and professor of history; Shelton Stromquist, history professor; and Leslie Schawlm, associate history professor. They praised Schacht's ability and willingness to help history students find the proper resources and his help in designing Web sites.
"John's background as a historian has also enabled him to provide excellent help to faculty in identifying and ultimately acquiring research collections on microform that have been enriched the possibilities for faculty and student research in the UI Libraries," they wrote in their nominating letter.
Schacht said he is gratified to receive the award.
"Since I'm nearing retirement, I'm naturally thinking these days about what my 25-plus years here have meant," he said. "The award pushes my already rather happy interpretation of those years into even happier light."
The award is named for its benefactor, Dr. Arthur L. Benton, professor emeritus in the department of neurology at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC), whose wife Rita served as the first head of the UI Music Library from 1957-1980. The Rita Benton Music Library is named in her honor.
The $1,000 award is used to support the winner's professional development.
